European Food Safety Authority (EFSA, 432/2012) during perennial researches and monitoring results, concludes and points out that selenium:
- Contributes to the normal thyroid function
- Contributes to the normal function of the immune system
- Contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress
- Contributes to normal spermatogenesis
- Contributes to the maintenance of normal nails
- Contributes to the maintenance of normal hair
Selenium is an essential and indispensable microelement (micronutrient), and an essential constituent of the organism. Selenium is not synthesized in the organism, it can not be displaced by other elements. Optimum consumption of selenium is necessary for every organism independent of the age or state of health, and is a obligatory prerequisite for protection, maintenance and strengthening of health.
BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION OF SELENIUM
Nearly 30 different selenium-specific proteins of biologic value have been identified in the human and animal organism, including several selenium-enzymes that carry out biologic function of selenium in the organism. Each selenium-enzyme has it’s typical biological functions. Selenium proteins have been scientifically established to be an essential value for normal functioning, development, protection and viability of the organism. When the level of selenium-proteins in the organism lowers due to the deficiency of selenium, health level reduction and pathology develops.
SELENIUM OR BIOLOGICALLY AVAILABLE SELENIUM?
Selenium can be found in many organic and inorganic forms. Various forms of selenium have been scientifically proved to differ not only chemically, but also are used by the organism in different ways. Many scientific and clinical studies, performed world-wide, have established that bioavailability and activity of various forms of selenium are directly depends from the efficacy of selenium to incorporate specifically into selenium-proteins. Selenium which does not specifically incorporate into selenium-proteins does not perform biological functions of selenium in the organism and does not provide benefit for the consumer.
